Madawaska River

The Madawaska River is a river in Ontario, Canada. The river is 230 km long and drains an area of 8,470 km².
It rises in the highlands of Algonquin Park and flows east, emptying into the Ottawa River at Arnprior.
The river's name comes from an Algonquin band of the region known as "Matouweskarini", meaning "people of the shallows". In the late 1800s, the river was used to transport lumber from the forested areas surrounding the river. Later, the river was used to generate hydroelectric power. Undammed sections of the river are also used for canoeing, kayaking and recreational fishing.

Lower Madawaska River Provincial Park
Lower Madawaska River Provincial Park is located in the southwest corner of Renfrew County in Eastern Ontario in Site District 5E-11. The river served as a major spillway draining meltwaters of receding late Wisconsinan ice. Surface features, characteristic of the spillway includes eskers, kames, outwash plains, terraces, kettles, bay mouth bars and gravel bars.
The park was regulated in 1989.

Upper Madawaska River Provincial Park
Regulated under the Provincial Parks Act (Ontario Regulation 279/85), Upper Madawaska River Provincial Park is classified as a Waterway park. Situated in the Algonquin Highland physiographic region of the southern Canadian Shield. The rocky shorelines are commonly vegetated by alder, winterberry, holly and other various shrubs and black ash forests.

Madawaska Kanu Centre
Since 1972, Madawaska Kanu Centre has provided courses and lessons to help paddlers at any level improve their skills and have fun on the water. Weekend courses and extended five-day courses are designed for specific interests.Situated on the banks of the Madawaska River, the centre is known for its breathtaking location, scrumptious meals and exceptional instruction.
Canoeing Designed for the more serious sport canoers, Madawaska offers courses specifically designed to teach people the skills they need to succeed on class II, III and IV whitewater courses. Tandem and solo programs ensure there are courses for everyone. Certification and diplomas courses are available. Family programs are also available.
Kayaking From basic paddling and turns to Eskimo rolls, kayak courses get paddlers on the right track and give them skills to take back to the canoe. A weekend course is a good introduction for a new kayaker or a refresher for an experienced paddler.
